Sam Parrish began his career in photojournalism with United Press International in Atlanta, Ga. in 1962. Some of the first events Parrish covered were part of the civil rights movement throughout the Southeast, including the integration of restaurants in Atlanta, the Birmingham church bombing and the marches on Selma, Ala and the death of Dr. Martin Luther King. In addition to the civil rights movement, Parrish photographed the NASA Space Flight Program, including the Saturn and Space Shuttle projects. He also covered the birth of Elvis Presley's daughter, and the death of the entertainment legend. Sporting events included 26 Masters golf tournaments, 23 Super Bowls, National League baseball, Hank Aaron's record-breaking home run, and various Olympic events. Parrish came to the Tennessean in 1990 and assumed several duties on the photo desk.
